New Year Concerts
Image Conducted by Sergei Gavrilov, İstanbul European Choir will be giving its season concerts on 13th and 14th January 2012. Two Magnificats by Pergolesi and Vivaldi will be performed at L’Eglise de L’Assomption in Moda on January 13th 2012 20:30 and at St Esprit Cathedral in Harbiye on January 14th 2012 20:30. The choir will be accompanied by pianist Lena Şenol. Concerts are free of charge.
 
Antonio Vivaldi

The music of Antonio Vivaldi is heard everywhere due to the tremendous success of his four concertos known as The Four Seasons. This popularity was not always the case. Like his contemporary J. S. Bach, his music lay largely unforgotten until in 1829 during the revival of interest in Bach largely inspired by Mendelssohn. It was discovered that Bach had based an organ piece on one of Vivaldi’s concertos. His music gradually became more well known but it was not until the 1930’s that he gained the recognition that he deserved. He produced a vast output – so many concertos that Stravinsky complained “The same concerto four hundred times”.

Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736)
ImageNapoli’nin Pergola kasabasından doğduğu için Pergola’lı olarak anılan besteci 26 yıllık kısa yaşamısırasında Mozart’ı da etkileyen La Serva Padrona (Hanım Olan Hizmetçi) ile ün kazanmıştır. Ölümüne kadar pek çok beste siparişi alan Pergolesi, Napoli ekolünün Geç-Barok döneminde uvertür, arya ve birçok müzik formunu zenginleştirmiştir.
Magnificat, “Aziz olsun” anlamına gelen Meryem Ana’ya övgü amacıyla bestelenmiş Latince kilise şarkısıdır. 18. yüzyıl İtalyan kilise müziğinin en bilindik örneklerindendir. Pergolesi’nin kutsal metinler üstüne bestelediği koral müziklerinden en ünlüsü Stabat Mater’dir. Onun yanısıra Missa’sı ve Magnificat’ı da özel bir yer tutar.

 
Vivaldi and Beatus Vir
ImageAntonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741) was an Italian Baroque composer, priest, and virtuoso violinist from the Venice. Vivaldi is recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread over Europe. Johann Sebastian Bach was deeply influenced by Vivaldi's concertos and arias (recalled in his St John Passion, St Matthew Passion, and cantatas). Vivaldi is known mainly for composing instrumental concertos, especially for the violin, as well as sacred choral works and over 40 operas.
