“2010 European Capital of Culture Mutual Concert Project”
“Over The Starry Sky” comprises two concerts, in the two 2010 European Capital of Culture cities, Ruhr and Istanbul, each performed by the Ruhr's Confido Vocale & Camerata and the Istanbul European Choir. This programme focuses on ‘Identity’, a concept integral to Ruhr2010’s main project: Twins2010, enabling and encouraging partner cities work together. The pieces, in the language of, and by composers from, the nations of the two choirs, are Beethoven's 9th Symphony and the Yunus Emre Oratorio by the Turkish composer Ahmet Adnan Saygun. |

İstanbul is now, officially, a 2010 European Cultural Capital.
With the opening activities held across seven different centers within the city, İstanbul is now, officially, a European Capital of Culture. |

An opening performance, on a stage in an old charcoal factory.
The opening ceremony of İstanbul’s 2010 partner, the Ruhr region in Germany, took place down the old mines. The exhibitions, concerts and shows, some of which were staged in tents, attracted thousands of people despite the temperature dropping to -4 °C. |

Prof. A.Adnan Saygun, one of the most prominent composers of Turkey,
also an ethomusicologist and a very distinguished teacher of music,
particularly composition, was born in Izmir. He started his musical
studies there, under private tuition, while studying also harmony and
counterpoint on his own. |

Adnan Saygun belongs to the first generation of the contemporary Turkish composers as the “Turkish five.”
The musical reform that Ataturk had envisaged was based on the concept
of combining the national values with contemporary techniques. Saygun
has given a most successful realisation of this principle in his first
major work, “Yunus Emre”. |

The Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 is the last complete symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Completed in 1824, it includes part of the Ode An die Freude ("Ode To Joy") by Friedrich Schiller, with text sung by soloists and a chorus in the last movement. It is the first example of a major composer using the human voice on the same level with instruments in a symphony. |

Ludwig's father drilled him thoroughly with the ambition of showcasing him as a child prodigy. Ludwig gave his first public performance as a pianist when he was eight years old. |
